Ex 3.3 Q2 (ii) - Five years ago, Nuri was thrice as old as Sonu. Ten years later, Nuri will be twice as old as Sonu. How old are Nuri and Sonu?

Solution:-

Let,
Present age of Nuri = 'x' years
Present age of Sonu = 'y' years

Case (i): Five years ago,

   *Age of Nuri = (x - 5) years
   *Age of Sonu = (y - 5) years

➙ Given that, Nuri was thrice as old as Sonu before five years,

   ∴ x - 5 = 3(y - 5)
   ∴ x - 5 = 3y - 15
   ∴ x = 3y - 15 + 5
   ∴ x = 3y - 10        ------- (i)

Case (ii): Ten years later,

   *Age of Nuri = (x + 10) years
   *Age of Sonu = (y + 10) years

➙ Given that, Nuri will be twice as old as Sonu after ten years,

   ∴ x + 10 = 2(y +10)
   ∴ x + 10 = 2y + 20
   ∴ 3y - 10 + 10 = 2y + 20      ---- { from (i) }
   ∴ 3y - 2y = 20
   ∴ y = 20

➙ Putting y = 20 in Eqⁿ(i)

   ∴ x = 3(20) - 10
   ∴ x = 60 - 10
   ∴ x = 50

Therefore,

   *Present age of Nuri
   = x
   = 50 years

   *Present age of Sonu
   = y
   = 20 years

Hence,
The present age of Nuri and Sonu is 50 years and 20 years respectively.

Try This..

✒ The age of a father is twice that of his son. Five years ago, the father's age was three times the son’s age. Find their present ages.

✒ The sum of the ages of two friends is 40 years. After 5 years, the sum of their ages will be 50. Find their present ages.

✒ Ten years ago, A was half of B’s age. After ten years, A will be 3/4th of B’s age. Find their present ages.

❌ Common Mistakes

Wrong variable assignment:
▸ Always let variables represent the current age, not past/future age.

Sign errors:
▸ While simplifying equations, Be cautious while subtracting!

Forgetting to verify:
▸ Always plug the values back into the original conditions to be sure.

>>> Tip: Draw a timeline if you get confused with “years ago” or “years later”!
